Our Health Education Team filmed an Afghan cooking video as part of our lead poisoning prevention project, which aims to help Afghans and other affected communities reduce their exposure to lead and combat lead positioning through nutrition.
Did you know that over 55% of Afghan refugee children are affected by lead poisoning? When we became aware of this, we partnered with Spokane Regional Health District, Washington Department of Ecology, and Washington State Department of Health to create educational materials and provide nontoxic alternatives to some common products, including pressure cookers, that are often the source of the exposure.
Second Harvest Inland Northwest was generous enough to allow us to use their beautiful kitchen space for Arzoo to cook Shorwa, a traditional Afghan dish, for this video. We appreciate their support and have been thrilled to be able to work with such amazing community partners to address this pressing health issue!
You can watch the videos and see some other educational materials we’ve developed on the Spokane Regional Health District’s website.
