Health & Wellness Services at The IRC- Spokane, WA

Health Education

Our Health Education team offers two main service tracks for clients. We also offer Provider Education workshops to clinics, private practices, non-profits, and other organizations serving refugees and immigrants in Spokane. Read more, below.

1.

Lead Poisoning Prevention

In collaboration with the WA State Department of Ecology, The Spokane Regional Health District, the WA State Department of Health, and local healthcare providers, we offer a wholistic approach to addressing elevated blood lead levels.

This includes direct intervention through periodic cookware exchange events and dissemination of educational materials including videos, flyers, and nutrition education to address the high rates of lead poisoning among refugees and immigrants.

This initiative focuses on Afghans, Syrians, and closely related communities in Spokane, but it is open to any refugee or immigrant who self-identifies as being affected by this health issue.

In collaboration with our partners, we’ve made some of the educational materials available online. Click the button below to view them on the Health District’s website.

Digital Health Literacy

Our Digital Health Literacy program teaches basic digital skills in group classes, workshops, and small group tutoring sessions. The goal is to equip participants with the skills necessary to access vital information, services, and healthcare in the US. When participants complete the required number of sessions, they receive a free laptop. Open to all Afghans regardless of status and other ORR eligible individuals.

We’ve made some of our curriculum and our curated library of digital literacy resources in other languages available online. Click the button below to explore.

Provider Education Workshops

The Health Education team offers Provider Education Workshops for health care or service providers and professionals who work with refugee and immigrant populations in Spokane. In these customizable 1- or 2-hour workshops, we introduce people to the refugee experience, cultural considerations, cross-cultural communication skills, and trauma informed service provision. If you have questions about this or are interested in having us present to your clinical or office staff, nonprofit workers, volunteers, etc., contact Dempsey Jorgenson at dempsey.jorgenson@rescue.org
